The MP3 files below are not based on recordings of human performers. They were
generated from within Finale using the Garritan Personal Orchestra (GPO). Although the samples
sounds of the GPO are vastly superior to the ordinary, monotonous synthesized

Symphony in B Flat -- Third Movement: Menuett |
Classical Symphony |
This is the third movement of the Symphony in B flat and
is dedicated to my wife on our wedding anniversary, which is today! The main
theme of this minuet is taken from the familiar Gaelic song "Morning Has
Broken" of which a version was recorded by Cat Stevens in the 60s. It is
also sung as a hymn in many Catholic churches in the English speaking world.
Also included is a second theme built as a trio performed mainly by flute,
oboe and basoon and used as a modulation device; a
trumpet variation of the main theme; an oboe version of the theme in a minor
key (which I think works quite well); a cello and contrabass statement of the
theme with temolo string accompaniment; a trumpet
call for the ending using the intervals of a fourth reminiscent somewhat of
the Andante movement (see below); and then a restatement of the "Morning
Has Broken" theme before fading out. |

Prelude in D Minor for Guitar |
Classical Guitar |
This is solo guitar piece I wrote today for my friend and
colleague Dr. Andrew Podolsky, who is a great of fan of guitar music. I plan to
write a fugue in D major to go with it. Perhaps, I'll get started on it
tomorrow, since I have a couple of days off from work for New Year's. (See
next entry) |

The Guadalupe Quintet |
Classical |
This is a quintet in D major for two woodwinds (oboe, bassoon) and three three strings (violin, viola, cello). It is called the Guadalupe Quintet in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe, since I began writing it on her feast day December 12, 2007 and finished it on Sunday, December 16, 2007. It probably needs a few tweaks of the dynamics. This is sort of semi-sonata form. The piece exhibits three themes, the first two are classical, sort Mozartian in flavor. The third theme is definitely more Bach-like and only occurs in its initial presentation and immediate development; it is not re-presented at the reprise. The Bach-like theme is presented in a kind of fugal manner.(Updated December 23, 2007) |

Pange Lingua |
Classical Guitar |
This is a piece I wrote for a friend of mine, Patty Roney, who lost her husband Jim Roney
this year. It is based on the Pange Lingua melody
attributed to St. Thomas Aquinas. I added a counterpoint to the theme and
inserted a short interlude at two places. The new GPO acoustic guitar sound
that came with Finale 2008 sounds almost real! Well, at least it is better
than synthetic |
